How Can I Get My Puppy to Stop Biting My Arms and Legs?

I'M Dr. Clayton Greenway with healthcareforpets.com and we're answering questions this morning that came into the website. Here'S another one from Sandy and it says ``. My dog is five months old. It'S a Beagle Blue Heeler [, Dr. Clayton, Greenway and she's, using behavioral modification to deal with puppy bites that cause bleeding on her legs and arms. ] She thinks it's a game, she'll nip and then shall run around like a maniac and bites really hard. It hurts it bleeds it's hard to catch the dogs.

How Can I Get My Puppy to Stop Biting My Arms and Legs?

How do I get my puppy to stop biting my arms?

She is really running like a maniac, So I appreciate the question I like this question. It'S an interesting one for me to come at because I'm not a behaviorist, I'm a veterinarian, so it's always good to go to a training facility, get advice from from people who do this professionally and what's interesting about this and what I always tell clients is these Days, training is all about positive reinforcement and not about dominance and not as much about discipline so with positive reinforcement.

How do I get my puppy to stop biting my hands and feet?

What you want to try to achieve is that, when the puppy kind of calms down you want to positively reinforce that by giving a treat, except it's it's really hard to implement that so and to execute it properly. So I'd have you work with someone to try to figure that out I do have a way that I've always told clients to deal with biting, but let's talk about a couple things before I get to it When they get into this zone and they're biting they're in a high state of energy they're at a high energy level. So you don't want to engage them at that time.

How do I get my puppy to stop biting my legs and feet?

You particularly don't want to grab their face because, usually when they pull away they're gon na want to nip your fingers become the play thing. You become the play thing. So what you want to do is you want to give that puppy things to do when they're in maniac zone? You want to give them toys stuff like that, but you have to do it in a way that you're not positively reinforcing it. You just want to turn your back as well.

You don't want to be the play thing, so you want to turn your back. Go about your business and wait until your puppy calms down a bit Now. The one thing that I tell people to do in the appointment room that I think works really well, these things, I have to say everyone has their different opinions about them. Some people may disagree with this, but this is what you're going to get from trainers. Behaviorists,

You will get different opinions when a puppy bites another puppy, What is that other puppy? Do It yelps and that's how they actually know they're hurting that other puppy, and so what I do in the room is I take their puppy they're sitting on the table and I put my fingers in front of its face and it naturally starts to bite on Them You got ta, remember these puppies.

They explore the world with their mouths, and this is this is what they do In a sense, they're teething, so they're gon na start biting on my fingers. Well, the second they bite on my fingers. I let out a yelp, and I mean I have a really good yelp and in fact before I do it, I tell people that it's gon na be me yelping and not the dog, because they actually think the dog did it and here's what I do. Okay, I go like [ Dr. Clayton Greenway High pitch yelp ] that big that loud and everyone in the clinic can hear it, and the dog instantly reacts to that and sees I I hurt this this person.

How do I get my puppy to stop biting my arms

Why does my dog bite my hands and arms?

It might freak them out just a little bit and that's why people may not go with that advice. It might be just a little scary, so you have to talk to a trainer or behaviorist and do what's right for you, but the second. I do that. I then put my fingers in front of this puppy's face again and they start going like this and they start moving away from my fingers.

They don't want to hurt me. They don't want that to happen, and sometimes I'm not sure whether they're thinking they don't want to hurt me verse, they're a little scared of my fingers. So you have to talk to your veterinarian about this People have come back to me and said this works extremely well.

They don't see any other negative effects in their puppy when a puppy bites another puppy, that's exactly what they do, so you are doing something that's naturally occurring. So I don't see much wrong with that. But other people may have different opinions, So collect your opinions, figure out what you think and employ some of those strategies, and I think you'll find that they work pretty well.

I really appreciate the question. Good luck: it's not easy, raising a puppy and keep those questions coming to healthcareforpets.com, where we're dedicated to to your pet's health...

Stop My Puppy From Biting - Are You Making This Costly Mistake?

are you making this costly mistake

Many common mistakes are made when puppies bite, chew and articulate. This is usually a problem where many people usually give different advice. You can not think of an unconventional solution while at the same time knowing an important knowledge. The main topic will be to see a problem with your puppy's eyes. This is the best way to better understand your pet and prevent a puppy from biting.

Many times the owners of puppies teach them word of mouth and tact. If it is a routine, it is inevitable to fix the problem later. This is usually the usual way to learn a puppy. Teaching puppies to pray quietly when they are small often leads to harder bites. This is the worst thing for the owner of a pet.

Dressing a puppy can be complicated and confusing because it is true. Pet owners should not think that they are alone, as most people learn to train puppies in this way. However, there are easier ways to train puppies and older dogs. The main aspect you should consider is the consistency with the way a command and rule of thumb are applied when the dog grows. These must be the same and must not change.

Some steps must be followed to stop the bites of the puppies.

- Puppies should receive chews. This can be a piece of string, wood or other soft object. - Encourage the puppy not to bite and chew on fingers and clothes. Puppy on the ground and make a scream or some other noise to indicate the pain, and then move away. Rest for a minute with puppies when they talk to you or to clothing.

There are also some tips you should think about to stop biting puppies.

1 - Puppies should have several options at the age of eight weeks. They need time to understand that their actions are undesirable. The mouth should not be tolerated even after five months.

2 - Make sure that the puppy has something to chew when he calls you after being called. The owner of a pet is preparing to fail if it does not stay constant. Dogs and puppies feel connected to their mouths, while people often do so with their hands. This means that a dog has something to chew when holding it in his hand.

3 - If you ignore or insult a chew toy, keep your puppy on the ground. The most important thing to remember is not to call "no" with a command voice. This is another type of old-fashioned training technique that has been used in the past. This often makes dogs more excited and is not what you want.

The key to developing a wonderful relationship with every puppy is to understand them. When you see the actions that you perform with your eyes, you will know how they feel.

These are some of the most important things to learn obedience training your dog. If you want to train your dog successfully, you must always be patient and persistent.

how to train your puppy to stop biting you?

Today's articel is sponsored by pup box you need let go of my sweater please owl you have to let go of my hand so I can make a articel how to train a puppy not to bite it's always the cute ones that fight the hardest isn't it like this instead pop box is a monthly box that's designed to help you train your dog every box comes with the things that you'll need to train your puppy you like this two-month box for example has a soft tug toy a rubber squeaky toy I mean that'll get any dog's attention this Nylabone chew that's great for teething puppies treats for training if you have a puppy you're definitely gonna need something to clean up accidents to make potty training smoother I love that they include this and whites to keep your pup clean.

How to Stop a Puppy From Biting?

This is so perfect for those of you that want to train your puppy as your puppy grows their training needs are going to evolve and pup box is designed to grow with your dog if you need a written guide to help you these will help keep you on track with your training each month better get to reading these don't be fooled by this cuteness puppyhood is hard pup box makes it easier go to pop up use discount codes at to get 50% off your first pup box I do lots of live Q&A s give you training advice as well let's get to know you guys better communicating with a dog isn't exactly the most natural thing to them especially when they're this young so we have to delicately and methodically introduce the concept of communication to them one thing we need to communicate to you is how to stop biting I think this is Jenny.

Jenny is Linus's mom okay welcome to the dog training revolution what have you been training him so far Syd we've tried to work on lay down potty training has been going very well how about puppy biting how's that going best with that obviously he's a big puppy biter he's just chomping away here look at that on give me my finger back those are some sharp cheese dogs at this age you know they just like to bite on things this is how they interact with the world add to that the fact that he's teething this is so instinctive and natural to them it's not very realistic to get rid of puppy biting like that it's actually a weeks-long process there are three major ways to address puppy biting.

First place a strong emphasis on communicating to your dog what level of biting is acceptable and what isn't some people will make a loud yelping noise or something to discourage their dog from biting but honestly that's really up to you since you should be teaching your dog the difference between yes and no a simple monotone no followed by restricting access to your flesh or clothing very consistently will play a big part in teaching them when they do get you like this let them know when they're biting hard oh that hurts you know communicate that in your own way no in other words it's just about communicating with your dog every time that you interact with them you have to have a clear focus on improving that communication that kind of a chunk of Turkey in my hand and he's biting right now but he's biting.

How to Stop a Puppy From Biting Your Feet and Hands?

So softly in other words that's a step in the right direction so don't feel like it needs to be all or nothing with your dog - this will teach him how to bite more gently because again biting in and of itself isn't that bad if they're very gentle about it you could always phase it out completely later on but right now we want to make it easy for me tolerate even encourage soft biting or properly communicate when biting is too rough bite instantly eliminating their access to whatever it is they're biting dogs like this they tend to bite a little when you touch them firmly I mean there's a good example right there like if you touch their feet because they're sensitive you can see them squirming but I actually want to get him real comfortable with being handled.

So I'm gonna touch him and let him nibble on that Turkey to see he's not biting he's licking right now that's a good thing and licking at least at this point a lot better than biting isn't it so I'm gonna touch his ears again another sensitive area while I'm touching his ears you can see I'm letting him nibble right here because he's behaving acceptable we're also giving him this positive association of being touched firmly and awkwardly like this of getting Turkey - so that'll conditioned him to be like oh okay Train Your Puppy to Stop Biting when people touch me firmly I get something real good so that's really valuable because I mean imagine you know sometime in the future a 4 year old child comes up to him and pulls his tail or something you know you want to make sure that he's going to react well rather than just disciplining your dog or putting them in timeout show them what is okay to chew on you please stop chewing on my watch.

Thank you secondly consistently redirecting your dog to bite unacceptable things like a toy is likely to satisfy the requirement to bite on something what I like about this toy that comes with the pup box is that it has different textures that keeps puppies engaged when our dog is engaging us like this they're really just trying to say hey I want to interact with you let's do something and I think that's really healthy in general so I will take a toy and I'm gonna try to get his attention on this tug toy right here and let him know look you can bite on this all day long let's see if that works sometimes it just takes a little coaxing you know in other words we don't just put it down like that we want to move it around make it exciting yeah there we go one of the reasons I like to go straight into tug-of-war with a puppy bite or two is because you're really teaching them how to play total war you know and tug-of-war is a real valuable currency and just because you do this doesn't mean.

Puppy Biting

He's just gonna be magically attracted to the tug toy you know he still may get your your sleeves or your clothing from time to time and in those instances we just want to redirect him to the thing that's ok to chew on he hasn't really bit me lately he's been focused all on this this is a good thing I didn't expect lunging at my face all right what do you suggest I do and ever he does that cuz usually it's whenever we're like laying in my bed and he just like goes at it when dogs get really overexcited like they're lunging at your face and you're trying to redirect them and they're having none of it then a brief timeout for 30 seconds to two minutes as a good idea but then you know probably bring them out and give them an opportunity to listen again another good thing to do is probably take them on a short walk or something like that to get some of that extra energy out when they're in that really rambunctious mode now in some cases you don't necessarily want to rile your dog up and get them playing in some cases you just want to encourage calm behavior that's where using food instead of a toy comes into play that you can see he knows.

I've got some turkey in this hand over here and I actually want to illustrate something right here I'm gonna give him just a tiny piece of Turkey just to let him know I've got something good and I want to point out something watch how hard it is to get him biting now I'm actually gonna egg him on a little bit and play with them and see how he do you see the biting I mean it's he's it's almost non-existent there do you know why that is that's because when a dog gets into food mode they're like oh I don't care biting anymore I want some of that food I'm gonna go ahead and give him another little piece there and for those of you wondering at home is this rewarding the biting because he was just biting and you gave him a treat not in the slightest I'm not rewarding the biting I'm rewarding the intermittent period of time there.

Where he didn't bite third redirecting your dog into a standard training session using a good treat will go a long way to showing your dog how you want them to behave instead of biting you can't have refrigerated meat all the time so it's important to have high-value treats like this accessible so that you can easily snap into training mode when necessary and if you taught your dog to sit then we'll just lure him back into a sit right there so when those biting fits start consistently redirecting him into a sit is a great way to get traction on the biting these tricky trainer treats come with the 2-month pup box obviously Linus loves them that's an example of redirecting him then getting his attention on use and now he's not biting right there he's biting me but I'm gonna withdraw my hand right maybe let's get a look at me yes give your dog something easy to do every time they start to bite yeah.

How to Train a Puppy Not to Bite?

There you go there you go good job really biting on my watchband let me get his attention on me I'll take it even an upside down look at me cool nice job you're such a lap dog this is gonna be cute when you're 90 pounds getting his attention off of biting and on to obedience like this is such a great way to address puppy biting we've been working on lie down but it's off and on sometimes he'll do it and sometimes you ball okay that was pretty yeah when you have a puppy better like this it's pretty easy to predict when they're going to be in a bitey mood they'll foreshadow they'll start slow and they can get more vigorous so it's important for you as their person to be one step ahead of them so if you've got your treats handy which they should be everywhere throughout the house when you have a dog this young and you have some toys here and there then you ought to be able to grab them and either convert it into a play session with them in order to build that bond and play with them which is very powerful and will yield great results in future training or redirect them into a training session.

It's important that you not just rely on playing with a toy or can hurting it into an obedience lesson with food you really need to do a combination of both of these things a lot of people get thrown off because it doesn't work light immediately mm-hmm you have to do this like hundreds of times over the next few weeks I just try to be consistent that's the magic word I mean the other huge part of resolving puppy biting is making sure that you're managing their environment in other words like some people have small kids in the house if you're a parent and you have young kids please understand that it is your responsibility to manage your dog and keep them from play biting the kids it's not realistic to have young kids go through the actions that we've covered today how do I stop my puppy from being biting we manage them by having them on leash even inside and a dog who bites a lot is likely to be energetic with dogs that have a lot of energy what is it we need to do with them you can't bypass exercise. When the dog is very energetic puppy biting like this can go on - a dog is about five months old I can go on much longer into adulthood if you don't address it so some level of puppy biting is pretty normal
